Wayne State University

FAQs

Your event is terrific.  My how new faculty orientation has changed since the last time I was new.  Your energy is contagious and your easy going “let’s make this fun” attitude are essential to the success of what is often expected to be long and tedious days.  Job well done.  -2012

Who should attend?

New faculty orientation is open to all full-time faculty who have been hired since August 21, 2015, or those who were unable to attend last year's orientation. While your college and/or department may offer an orientation, this is the only university-wide orientation offered for new faculty and it is strongly encouraged.

How long is orientation?

It is a two day event. Sessions include presentations by offices such as Benefits, Research, the AAUP-AFT, Academic Senate, as well as college-specific sessions on promotion and tenure. We build in networking events and a resource fair to ensure that you are meeting people and making contacts across the campus. We strive to make it a fun and informative event to welcome you to Wayne State!

How much does it cost to attend?

There is no cost for you to attend. Orientation is offered as a free resource to help you become familiar with the Univeristy and provide you with information that will assist you in being successful throughout your career at Wayne State.

How often is orientation offered?

Once a year. If you are unable to attend the 2016 orientation, you are welcome to join us at the 2017 orientation; however, we strongly suggest you attend your cohort's orientation, as much of the information will be helpful for navigating your first year at Wayne State.

What should I bring with me to orientation?

Bring any questions you may have after reviewing the information on this site (e.g., questions about benefits or the Live Midtown program) and wear a pair of comfortable shoes. Some of our activities require walking around campus. If you need accomodations or have any questions about the event, please email us at newfaculty@wayne.edu or call (313) 577- 2256.

Thank you for organizing the faculty orientation. I really enjoyed it and found it very informative. I particularly enjoyed the lunch, cocktail hour and happy hour where we had time to talk with the Deans and older faculty and get to know the other new faculty. Since I am the only new faculty in my department, I am glad I got a chance to meet the other new faculty. – 2011

If you have a question that doesn't seem to be answered, contact us at newfaculty@wayne.edu or (313) 577-2256.

Does WSU have a partner/spousal hiring program?

WSU does not have a partner/spousal hiring program, but we are a member of the Michigan Higher Education Recruitment Consortium, a resource dedicated to dual career couples in Michigan. You can access their website here.

We also have a number of connections around metropolitan Detroit that may be able to assist your partner or spouse's search for employment.

The event was very useful and I learned many interesting and necessary aspects of WSU. - 2010
